An Arab League summit being held in Baghdad is due to discuss a UN endorsed peace plan for Syrian. The summit, which is being attended by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, will consider options to deal with the continuing situation within Syria and discuss a six point plan for both a ceasefire and peace talks formulated by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.
However opinions are divided amongst members on how best to tackle the issues in Syria. Member states are rejecting the proposal of foreign intervention in the country whilst Syria itself has said that is prepared to reject any initiatives that emerge from the summit and will deal only with individual Arab states. There are fears that any move to displace President al-Assads government could lead to further destabilisation and a wave of sectarian violence.
