Researchers at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland have identified a new gene class called microRNA, which could potentially prevent epileptic seizures from occurring. MicroRNA is instrumental in the control of protein production. Researchers found that the levels of one type of microRNA are higher in the region of the brain responsible for epileptic seizures.
By utilising a new form of drug, known as an antagomir, the gene could potentially be isolated and removed from brain cells, thus preventing epileptic seizures.
