In a further undermining of the al-Assad regime, Syrian rebel forces have taken control of a military installation close to the Iraq border. The army base which is located near Mayadeen is also located strategically close to key Syrian oilfields.

The taking of the base by rebels means the al-Assad government now control only three remaining military bases in the Deir al-Zor province. Restrictions on international reporting make opposition forces reports difficult to verify however it is also thought at this time that rebels control the main road from Deir al-Zor city to Iraq.
